Blanchard Dam area near Royalton and Little Falls is a well-known public collecting site for staurolite crystals (cross rocks/fairy crosses). These naturally twinned staurolite crystals form in the shape of crosses (Maltese, St. Andrew's, and prismatic). Surface collecting of loose rocks is permitted, but digging in river banks is not legal. The stones are sought after as good luck pieces and are often made into jewelry. Access via Hilton Road to 68th Street.
